Shortly after moving in, the residents discovered a number of problems with the properties, including the discovery that the flats weren’t registered with the council, which meant they couldn’t get local doctor appointments and house insurance.
However, the most immediate and perhaps most dangerous problem was the damp and mould that started to appear rapidly throughout the properties. Indeed, the mould became so bad that the tenants' clothes, shoes, furniture and bedding became infested by the dangerous substance. Skin complaints developed and one of the tenant’s mothers, who was undergoing chemotherapy, was advised by doctors not to visit the flats for fear the mould would interfere with her treatment.
Despite multiple attempts to talk to Gillcrest about remedying the issue so they could live in a healthy and safe and environment, the residents were left disappointed as the managing agent refused to accept any responsibility and refused to pay compensation. This would appear to be in direct violation of the Housing Act's new rules that were introduced in March 2019 and state that landlords must take steps to remedy serious damp problems.
When contacted by a reporter who was investigating the accusations, Gillcrest reportedly claimed the damp and mould problems were exaggerated, despite photographic evidence to the contrary, and now is attempting the evict two of the flats’ occupiers. Gillcrest are now involved in a legal battle with the tenants.
Why is mould so dangerous?
Caused by poor ventilation and an excess of moisture, damp and black mould not only looks unseemly and can ruin belongings such as the ones described in this case but has also been shown to be the cause of some serious health complications. Mould releases spores that infuse the air with allergens, irritants and even toxic substances which when inhaled, can lead to inflamed airways, nasal congestion, wheezing, chest constriction, coughing and a sore throat among other more serious symptoms.
It is crucial not to ignore a damp problem as prolonged exposure can lead to reduced lung function and cause chronic health problems like asthma or pneumonia. Like a lot of illnesses, babies, young children, and the elderly are more at risk of developing side-effects from living with mould, while those living with pre-existing skin conditions, respiratory issues and weakened immune systems are also more at risk of heightened side effects.
