Cardiff flats left damp-ridden by cladding removal

Home » Cardiff flats left damp-ridden by cladding removal

Residents reported water leaking through ceilings and walls and some have even fallen ill as a result. “The smell of the downpours was awful. We had to have the windows and doors constantly open. It was absolutely freezing cold. I was taken ill with flu,” one resident reports.

Seven months following the removal of the cladding, they are still waiting for a solution, though the Welsh Government says it has “no plans” to fund the replacement work.

Cardiff Council, who was responsible for the removal of the cladding, is paying £200 towards resident bills and says a fix will be in place by the summer of 2020, though plans are in limbo due to the Welsh Government’s lack of cooperation to fund the project.

Many residents are far from happy about this arrangement; one resident reported that she was forced to bin her entire wardrobe last winter as it was covered in dangerous black mould. She and her husband now have to keep their clothing wrapped in plastic bags to prevent it becoming damaged by damp.

Is mould dangerous?

Other than being ghastly to look at, there is significant evidence that damp and mould can cause and exacerbate a range of health problems according to the NHS, especially in the young, vulnerable and elderly. As such, it is never a good idea to ignore a damp problem, no matter how seemingly small. The presence of black mould spores in particular are a significant health hazard that should be removed as quickly as possible.
