Damp threatening Britain’s historic wall art

Home » Damp threatening Britain’s historic wall art

The damp has creeped into buildings and as its been left unchecked, has caused serious damage to the structure of the properties, causing them to literally crumble in some cases. This deterioration is not only ruining some of the works of art but is hampering attempts to save and restore them.

Damp ruining ancient works of art

The charity manages over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places and warns that time is running out to save the 77 wall paintings it cares for across England. Many of these treasures, some of which date back to before the Sistine Chapel, are found at various locations in the country including roman villas, ancient churches and abbeys and country manors. One of the most important is the art at St Mary’s Church in Kempley, Gloucestershire as it is home to some of the best-preserved medieval wall paintings in Britain. One of the rarer examples date from the early 12th century and are the most complete set of Romanesque frescos in northern Europe.

Audits and damp surveys have begun to determine which paintings and buildings are most at risk from the dangers of damp. Rachel Turnball, English Heritage’s senior collections conservator, said ‘if they are to survive for future generations to enjoy, we need the public’s help today to repair their buildings, stabilise their structures and protect them from damp and decay before time runs out.’

Why is damp so dangerous?

Damp is excess water sitting in the structure of a building, caused either because it has leaked in from the outside or through the build-up of condensation inside. Damp conditions can lead to serious structural damage of a property, affecting integral timbers and other building materials. Prolonged exposure to the excess moisture causes the affected areas to rot and, eventually, to break down and collapse. Damp also provides the perfect environment for black mould to thrive. Black mould not only looks unattractive but can cause serious damage to a person’s health.
