Rising damp occurs when the masonry structure of a property has been left unprotected and a damp proof course has either not been installed or is defective. Without effective treatment, rising damp will continue to get worse.
3 Benefits of tanking your cellar
The damp proofing experts at Croft Preservation explain what cellar tanking is and why it could be a worthwhile investment in your home.
What is cellar tanking?
Cellar, or basement, tanking is a waterproofing process that involves repairing and preparing the existing masonry substrate in your basement, to make it resistant to damp and protect the internal space by adding a waterproof barrier between the interior and exterior walls.
As part of the process, we will also remove damaged plasterboard or masonry to strip your basement back to its original building material. This will be cleaned and prepared thoroughly before the waterproof layer is installed.
There are several types of basement tanking methods available to protect from damp, which is why our property surveyors will carry out an initial assessment of the area to understand its unique features. From there, they will make their recommendation based on their findings and discuss the most suitable option for your home that ensures maximum effectiveness and longevity.
Here are three reasons why basement tanking could be worthwhile for your home.
1. Protect your possessions
If you’re currently using your basement or cellar as storage, effective waterproofing is the best way to protect your possessions from getting damp. Because basements are below the ground, the surrounding earth becomes a route for water to enter through the walls. Without proper waterproofing, basements can quickly become damp.
This can lead to mould, unpleasant musty smells and damage to your possessions.
2. Create useable space
Not only do basements provide valuable storage space, but they also have the potential to be used as an additional living area. If you’re lucky enough to have a reasonably sized basement, there are all sorts of things you could use the extra space for. You could transform your basement into a playroom, entertainment room, or even an additional bedroom.
There are of course other steps you’ll need to take in order to convert your basement into a useable living space, but basement tanking is an essential first step.
3. Add value to your home
A useable cellar or basement that’s been properly waterproofed will undoubtedly add value to your home. Even if you haven’t carried out a full conversion yourself, waterproofing your basement or cellar will still create valuable storage space and show potential buyers that they have the option of turning it into another room if they wish.
