How to fix damp problems in your home

How to fix damp problems in your home

Before you can fix the damp problem in your home, it’s important to correctly identify the source of the issue.

The correct damp treatment will depend on the type of damp problem present in your property. It’s extremely important that you identify what type of damp it is so that the right damp proofing solution can be recommended to you. It can be difficult to determine what type of damp you have in your home, which is why one of our damp surveyors can come to your property and find the cause, offering an effective solution in the process.

Croft Preservation are your local damp experts in Dorset and Hampshire and will carry out a comprehensive property inspection to get to the root of your problems with damp and establish the right course of action. To find out more, contact us today on 01202 737739.

Common damp problems and how to fix them

Rising damp

Whilst there are several types of damp problem, rising damp can be one of the easiest to identify. Unlike penetrating damp or condensation, rising damp is only found on the ground floor of a property, rising up to 1.5m from the floor. Even if you think you’ve identified rising damp in your home, it’s always best to seek the advice of a professional in order to ensure a correct diagnosis.

Fixes for rising damp include removal of contaminated plaster and the injection of a damp-proof course to create a water-resistant protective layer throughout the wall. Affected walls should then be re-plastered and treated with salt-inhibiting and waterproofing additives. If your home has already received a course of damp proofing, it would be wise to get this checked by a professional to make sure that this is working as expected. Penetrating damp

Penetrating damp occurs when water from the outside penetrates through to the inside walls of your home. As opposed to rising damp, penetrating damp can form at any level of a property including ceilings, roofs and walls.

To fix penetrating damp, you will need to identify and eliminate the cause of the damp problem. For example, if the cause of penetrating damp is due to a leaking pipe or hole in the roof, you will need to have these repaired first before fixing any damage caused. Due to the complexity of this type of damp problem, it is advised that you call your local damp experts to take a look and give an accurate diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Condensation

Condensation is usually most prevalent during colder months and is caused by a build up of moisture within your home through daily actions such as cooking and washing. Properties therefore naturally create moisture, so the best way to avoid condensation is to invite fresh air into your home and ensure you have an effective ventilation system in place.

The first step to solving an existing condensation problem is to fix any ventilation issues. Croft Preservation can offer a variety of solutions that are all designed to expel excess moisture in the air, employing methods such as air bricks and various ventilation systems. We will be able to recommend the best solution to your particular ventilation problem, so don't hesitate to get in touch with our experts to find out how we can help you rid your home of condensation.
