Damp and mould the cause of lung condition
Zoe Williams, who is seven months pregnant, was admitted to hospital after suffering from flu-like symptoms. Following an examination, Ms Williams was diagnosed with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a condition that causes the lungs to become incredibly sensitive to something you breathe in – like mould spores – which results in the lung tissue becoming inflamed. Symptoms of the condition include coughing, shortness of breath, fever and joint pain and treatment includes taking steroids and avoiding the trigger.
Worries the damp flat will affect her children
After an initial misdiagnosis, Zoe’s condition is now so bad she has scarring on her lungs which affects her breathing and causes her to be more susceptible to chest infections. After spending almost two weeks in hospital, Zoe was once again well enough to return home but was told by doctors that she wasn’t allowed to return to her flat because of the presence of damp, which they feared could make her condition worse. The mother of two has been admitted to hospital five times since living in her Cardiff flat, which she moved into twelve years ago, and now fears her children will also start to feel the ill effects of having to live with damp and mould.
Damp and mould treatment from council
Cardiff council have said they are ‘working closely with housing resettlement officers at the University Hospital of Wales and … are awaiting a report from Ms Williams’ consultant to understand exactly what the issue might be and how it can be alleviated.’ The council goes on to say that ‘officers have visited the property … and a damp patch caused by a leak has been noted and urgent repair work will be carried out.’ It’s hoped Ms Williams will be able to return safely to her flat soon.
