When wood is used where it is frequently damp, preservation is essential to prevent decay. Some examples of where this can often occur are garage doors, timber casement windows and front or back doors. Timber treatment is a process which combats decay and preserves the timber in your home, significantly increasing the lifespan of whichever item is affected by decay – by removing the affected wood and replacing it with timber with a treatment coat to prevent future occurrences.
Here at Croft Preservation we believe that prevention is always better than cure and this is especially true for timber preservation. Timber treatment is a relatively cost-effective solution to what could be an extremely costly problem further down the line, the preservative treatment is always a worthwhile insurance against the cost of subsequent repairs.
Dry rot is the deterioration of wood becoming consumed by the damp and is characterised by a musty smell and accompanied by strands and fungi growing on the wood, you may also notice a powdery substance on there.
Wet rot can be more difficult to spot as it is not immediately as visible as dry rot. Upon inspection, for instance by poking it with a screwdriver you will feel a sponge like texture along with the wood looking darker than the surrounding timber and the wood will feel wet to the touch.
Wet and dry rot can be huge issues for any property. They differ in their diagnoses’ but both can cause long-term problems to the structure of your building, which can potentially lead to health and safety problems – If you notice these signs in your wood then you have a problem and the area will need to be treated and infected timber will need removing and repairing by an experienced professional.
Woodworm is not actually caused by a species of worm, but a species of beetle and its larvae that will leave small holes and dust in and on timber, so if you noticed holes in your wood, again, you may have a problem and should call a professional as soon as possible to recieve treatment for woodworm.
At Croft Preservation, our damp experts can eradicate the rot problem and advise on how to treat the timber itself, should it have been damaged in any way. Timber can crack or become extremely brittle, so it’s important to treat the problem as soon as possible to ensure the structural integrity of your building.
