How do I know if my property needs a new damp proof course?

Most properties built in the last 100 years will have had a damp proof course (DPC) installed, however, if this has not been installed correctly then a property may still experience problems with damp. If you have noticed signs of rising damp on your internal walls, then chances are that you either don’t have a damp proof course at all, or it has been installed incorrectly and requires replacement.

We can identify if your home has a faulty damp proof course with a property survey and will offer an effective damp treatment to solve your problems with damp. Contact us on 01202 737739  for a no-obligation damp proofing quote.

What are the benefits of a damp proof course?

> Improved smell – Excess damp and moisture in the home caused by rising damp can lead to mould growth, which when left untreated can create a musty smell and atmosphere that can be unpleasant for you and your guests.

> Better health - If a member of your family suffers from health conditions such as asthma, eliminating damp problems will likely improve their symptoms.

> Increase the value of your home – If not treated and eliminated, damp can be a persistent problem that is off-putting for potential buyers. If you are attempting to sell a house that has problems with damp, or are starting to notice signs, then it is highly recommended that you treat them as soon as possible so the value of your home isn't affected.

> Prevent structural issues – Damp proof course repair can also help prevent structural problems such as subsidence, cracks, and more, which will help ensure less expensive remedial work further down the line.

Damp Proof Course FAQs

What is a Damp Proof Course?

Damp Proof Courses (DPCs) have been installed in new-build homes in the UK for 100 years now, serving as crucial protection against rising damp. Rising damp is caused by moisture from the ground moving upwards into a property, which damages the structural integrity and makes for unpleasant implications.

DPCs are installed within the structure of the building, in the form of a mortar course with an added bitumen or plastic sheet. It should be at least 150mm above ground level to be effective.

How do I Know if I Need a Damp Proof Course?

You should always have a DPC no matter the property, so if yours doesn’t, then there is no other reason needed – however, if you’re sure you do have DPC and are still noticing the telltale signs of rising damp, then there’s a strong chance that the DPC previously installed is now faulty.

If you notice these things, get in contact with Croft:

Once you’ve called out Croft Preservation, we’ll be able to complete a thorough damp survey that tells us exactly what you need.

What is a Damp Survey?

A damp survey is conducted by one of our damp specialists, who will assess the type and extent of the damp problem affecting your property before suggesting an effective solution to ensure it is resolved quickly.

What are the Benefits of a Damp Proof Course?

Making sure your property has an effective damp proof course installed will ensure protection against a host of damaging – but easily preventable – consequences.

You instantly protect yourself against cracks, dry and wet rot, and excess moisture in the structure of your property. This in turn reduces the number of costly call outs, installations and surveys as a result of damp.

Reducing the likelihood of damp taking hold in your home will also protect you from the nasty health effects of mould, too. These include headaches, wheezing, coughing, sore throats and sore eyes.
