Damp FAQs

How can I tell if I have damp in my home?

Different types of damp present themselves in different ways but common indicators include:

  • Mould or mildew growth
  • Dark or discoloured patches on walls, floors or ceilings
  • Lifting or peeling wallpaper or paint
  • Tide marks on the wall
  • Excessive condensation on windows
  • A damp or musty smell

How can I treat damp?

How you treat your damp problem will depend on the type of damp causing the issue, so the first step is identifying exactly what type of damp you have. There are a number of DIY treatments available that you can use, however, to ensure lasting success and future protection, contact an experienced damp professional to get to the root of the problem and carry out effective treatment and preventative measures.

How do you identify the type of damp causing the issue?

At Croft Preservation, in order to identify the type of damp in your property, our team of qualified damp surveyors will carry out a thorough damp survey and assessment using the latest technology and tools. We will then present our findings to you in a jargon free report, along with suggestions for remedying the situation should we find any damp.

Can you remove mould?

Yes, we offer effective mould removal and mould treatment services for commercial and residential properties across Dorset and Hampshire. As mould growth is often a sign of an underlying damp problem, our mould removal team will also look for signs of damp in order to help prevent the issue occurring again.

Is black mould dangerous?

Yes, black mould can be very dangerous to your health. The NHS warns that prolonged exposure to black mould can lead to many worrying symptoms such as skin irritation, allergic reactions and even respiratory complications. This is why it’s important to act as soon as you spot black mould growth in your home and to let a professional remove and treat the area.

Is condensation a problem?

The infrequent appearance of condensation is usually nothing to worry about but if it happens regularly, it can lead to damp problems and mould growth, both of which can have severe consequences for your property and health.

Condensation is the build-up of moisture often as a result of poor ventilation, so regular airing of your home, by opening doors and windows, should help dispel damp air and reduce condensation. In winter, this isn’t a practical solution so for a long-term fix, call a professional damp company like ourselves.

There’s a dark, discoloured patch at the top of my wall – is this damp?

Discoloured patches at the top of the wall is often an indicator of penetrating damp. Penetrating damp is the result of moisture, often rainwater, making its way inside your property through the walls. It can occur at any level of your property and is often caused by leaky roofs, damaged or blocked guttering, poor brickwork or cavity wall insulation. How penetrating damp is fixed will depend on the cause and severity of the issue. Feel free to call us to discuss your damp problem further.

Can I damp proof my basement?

Absolutely you can damp proof basements. There are a few options to choose from but the most popular is a cavity drain membrane that channels water safely away from the property. At Croft Preservation, we are registered installers of Delta Membranes, a leading manufacturer of basement waterproofing solutions established over 100 years ago and offer a product guarantee of 10 years.
