What is a damp proof course?

A damp proof course is a type of damp treatment barrier that protects your property against the effects of rising damp. As brickwork is porous, without an effective damp proof course you run the risk of groundwater being absorbed through your masonry due to capillary action and causing damp to appear on your inner wall and causing potential damage to your timber structure.

Most modern properties will have had a damp proof course installed during construction, however, there’s always the risk that it may become damaged and ineffective. Click here to find out how you can tell if your damp proof course has failed.

What are the different damp proof courses available?

There are several different types of damp proof course, all employing different methods of damp proofing:

Steel or plastic damp proof course

When a property is built, the builders will usually install a damp proof course made of either steel or plastic. Over time, there’s the risk of holes forming in this barrier which can cause it to be less effective. As these are installed during construction, they are difficult to replace and repair without the assistance of an experienced tradesman.

Electro osmotic damp proof course

An electro osmotic damp proof course generates an electric current between the wall and earth to provide interference, preventing damp from rising through the masonry. This method of damp proofing is well-suited to buildings with a wall thickness of 600mm or more, and is a popular choice for historic buildings because signs of the damp proof course can be well hidden.

Chemical damp proof course injection

A chemical damp proof course injection involves injecting a silicone based liquid through holes drilled into the mortar joints of your property. The benefits of a chemical damp proof course include speed, ease and cost, as compared to more intrusive damp proofing methods, a chemical damp proof course involves minimal time and work to install but is just as effective as other methods.

Whilst there are many DIY chemical damp proof courses available on the market, we suggest you call upon an experienced damp expert to help with installation. Poorly installed DIY damp proof courses make up some of the most frequent enquiries we receive, and it is easy to get wrong if you are not experienced.
