3 Reasons why you should never ignore damp problems in your home

3 Reasons why you should never ignore damp problems in your home

Category: DampDry RotWet Rot

For many people, a damp problem in their home is viewed as little more than an eyesore, however, ignoring damp in your home is a big mistake. Here are 3 reasons why.

Damp can damage your health

Research has discovered that mould caused by damp can have seriously negative effects on your health. In fact, the NHS has concluded that the presence of damp and mould increases your risk of developing respiratory problems and is particularly harmful to the young, the elderly and those suffering from lung conditions, allergies and weakened immune systems.

By ignoring a damp problem in your home, you are exposing yourself to a heightened risk of health problems. It’s therefore essential to treat damp as soon as it occurs, so that you can preserve the health of yourself and your family.

Damp can result in costly repairs

The longer you ignore your damp problem, the more time it has to cause damage to your property and the more it will cost you to repair. Damp can cause peeling plaster and paint, cracked skirting boards, damage to brickwork and the rotting and weakening of timber rafters and flooring.

Treating the source of your damp problem as soon as it appears is important for keeping your repair costs down and preventing damage from spreading.

Damp can cause structural damage

Not only is damp bad for your health, it’s bad for the health of your property too. Prolonged exposure to damp can result in cases of wet rot and dry rot, which can cause devastating damage to the timber structure of your property.

In the worst cases of damp, timbers can become so weak that your property may be considered hazardous to live in and can result in snapping or collapse. It is therefore in your own best interests to tackle damp as soon as you spot it to ensure that your property remains safe to inhabit.

Why Do Cavity Wall Ties Fail?

2nd May 2024

Within many modern constructions, cavity wall ties are often an unseen yet crucial component, keeping the two parts of a cavity wall acting as one. However, despite their importance within a structure, they can sometimes cause more problems than they solve, leading to potentially disastrous consequences for a building's structural integrity.
